Pixel Village
Pixel village is a 12 storey, 117 unit apartment block located within the Kuching airport precinct. Hemmed in on three sides by existing buildings of similar heights, the building mass is articulated to reduce direct overlooking and to achieve a more optimal north – south orientation. An offset is introduced at every two floors, further articulating the envelope, providing outdoor terraces for half of the apartment units.
A stacked Village
The building is conceived as a stacked village, each apartment retaining it’s address and visually represented on the exterior. The overall form becomes a sum of the parts, celebrating the unique identity and presence of each household. This sense of a village or kampung is mirrored on the inside, with corridors replaced with a network of walkways and bridges which provide for a highly communal and vibrant interior character.
A Modular Structural System
Despite its complex and highly varied expression, the building adheres to a simple underlying structural grid without the need for transfer structure. The highly repetitive nature of the resultant modules allow for better constructability, optimization of costs and long term adaptability.
