Rumah Batu Kawa

Social Housing

Rumah Batu Kawa is an unbuilt mid to high-rise affordable housing prototype developed with HSL Sdn Bhd. It explores and interrogates the existing typology of affordable housing in Malaysia – single fronted, poorly ventilated apartments aggregated along long artificially lit corridors.

Opening up the Plan

The prototype proposes to open up the plan by puling the 2 rows of apartments apart, bringing natural daylight deep into the plan and allowing cross ventilation. This allows for apartments to be double fronted, inproving internal amenity, without compromising on efficiency and disrupting the economics of affordability.

Corridor as Social Space

The corridors and stairs remain the last opportunity for variation and difference in structure bound by a strict adherence to tight costs controls and forced repetition. We envision these spaces as streets and walkways which provide for lateral connections and opportunities for communal interaction.
